The Jīva is in reality none other than Brahman, but when under the influence of Māyā, it begins to identify itself as a limited individual; thinking and acting as a separate conscious being. This mistaken identification is called Adhyāropa (superimposition). Through the teachings of Vedānta and the guidance of the Guru, this ignorance is gradually removed through Apavāda (negation), layer by layer, allowing one to rediscover and abide in one’s true nature as infinite Brahman.
