‘Desire is an expression of incompleteness’ Why do we desire, and why does the fulfilment of one desire lead to another? According to Advaita Vedānta, desire is an expression of incompleteness. Identifying ourselves with the Body, Mind and Intellect (BMI), we seek happiness through objects, achievements, name and fame. Yet, every fulfilment brings only temporary satisfaction, and the search continues. What are we truly seeking through these endless desires? Vedānta points us towards our essential nature as Sat-Cit-Ānanda, Existence-Consciousness-Bliss. Perhaps we are searching outside for the infinite happiness that we have yet to discover within.
