About
Word meaning and Indicative meaning . . . Hari aum! 🙏 The Guru who gave self-knowledge (ātma-jñāna) to both Indra and Virocana is Prajāpati (also referred to as Bṛhaspati in some texts, especially in the context of Indra). A brief context from the Chandogya Upanishad (Ch. 8) and the Śvetāśvatara Upanishad references: 1. Virocana – The Asura king went to Praṇava-knowledge (Brahma-vidyā) and gained the knowledge of the Ātman, but misapplied it in worldly or material terms. He understood the Self as gross and cosmic rather than transcendent. 2. Indra – He approached Prajāpati (Bṛhaspati) for the knowledge of Self. He gained the knowledge correctly, realizing the subtle, immortal, imperishable Ātman. So, the same teaching of Ātma-vidyā was given to both, but the reception differed due to Word meaning and Indicative meaning . • Virocana: Misunderstood, leading to worldly orientation. • Indra: Correct realization, leading to liberation. This is a classic example in Vedānta of Avaraṇa (non-apprehension) and Adhyāropa (misapprehension) – one received knowledge but interpreted wrongly, the other apprehended rightly. Hari aum!
