The very first sūtra of the Brahma Sūtras, “Athāto Brahma Jijñāsā”, is a call to begin the enquiry into Brahman, the Absolute Reality. “Atha” indicates an auspicious beginning and readiness, while “ataḥ” means “therefore-after acquiring the necessary qualifications such as discrimination, dispassion, self-mastery, and a deep longing for liberation. The sūtra teaches that the pursuit of Self-knowledge is not driven by curiosity alone but by a prepared and mature mind seeking freedom from sorrow. It marks the formal commencement of Vedāntic enquiry into the Truth of one’s own nature. Hari aum!
