About
The central theme of this chapter is understanding the three Guṇas-Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas-and learning how to transcend them. Sri Krishna also describes the qualities, indications, and characteristics of one who has gone beyond the Guṇas (Guṇātīta). In Chapter 13, Bhagwan briefly introduced the concepts of Prakṛti (Nature) and Puruṣa (Consciousness). In this chapter, He explains them in greater detail, showing that both ultimately depend upon the one Self (Brahman) alone. However, through identification with Prakṛti and its Guṇas, the Puruṣa appears to become bound and experiences limitation and suffering. A unique and highly practical feature of this chapter is its profound psychological insight. Sri Krishna explains how the three Guṇas influence the mind, shape our thoughts, emotions, desires, and actions, and thereby sustain our bondage. By understanding the Guṇas, we understand the workings of the mind. By understanding the mind, we learn how to rise above it. And by transcending the mind, we realise our true Svarūpa-our real nature as the ever-free, ever-pure Self. In essence: Know the Guṇas, understand the mind, transcend both, and abide in the Self. 🙏🏾 Hari Aum!
