About

What lies beyond the gross and the subtle body? Is the subtle body the final limit of reality? If not, then what is it? In today’s talk, we explore this profound inquiry. We begin by understanding that both the gross body and the subtle body are not independent realities. They have a common source - the causal body (Kāraṇa Śarīra), which is the unmanifest seed condition from which both emerge. The gross body is made of the five elements, and the subtle body consists of mind and intellect-thoughts, emotions, and cognition. But even these are not ultimate, because they arise from a deeper, unmanifest condition known as ignorance (Avidyā), the causal state. In deep sleep, both the gross and subtle bodies are resolved into this causal condition. Yet even this causal state is not the final truth, because it is also experienced as “absence” upon waking. Thus, we discover that even the causal body is not the ultimate reality. Hari aum!
