About
In Vedānta, ignorance (avidyā) does not operate only as “not knowing”. It has three distinct movements of the mind: 1) Non-apprehension : Avaraṇa (आवरण) This is the simple absence of knowledge the veiling power of avidyā. The truth is present, but the mind has not cognised it. Example: A person in a dark room does not see the rope, nothing is known about it. Spiritually: The Self (Ātman) is ever-present, but is not recognised. ➡️ “I do not know” state ➡️ Ignorance as veiling 2) Mis-apprehension : Adhyāropa (अध्यारोप) This is wrong knowledge, the projecting power of avidyā. Not only is the truth not known, but something false is superimposed. Example: The rope is seen as a snake. Spiritually: The Self is mistaken as body, mind, ego, roles, identities. ➡️ “I know, but wrongly” state ➡️ Ignorance as projection 3) Right-apprehension : Advaita-jñāna (अद्वैत ज्ञान) This is correct knowledge, non-dual recognition of Reality as it is. Example: The rope is known as a rope. Spiritually: “I am not the body, not the mind, I am the witnessing consciousness.” ➡️ “I know truly” state ➡️ Knowledge as liberation Vedāntic Insight Liberation is not about acquiring something new. It is about removing Avaraṇa (non-apprehension) and Adhyāropa (mis-apprehension). When avidyā is removed, Advaita-jñāna shines by itself. Truth does not need creation, it needs recognition. In one line: • Avaraṇa → I don’t know the truth • Adhyāropa → I know wrongly • Advaita-jñāna → I know rightly This is the entire journey of Vedānta: from not knowing, to wrong knowing, to right knowing, from avidyā to vidyā, from bondage to freedom. Hari aum! 🌺
